I have spent one decade in child welfare, including completing home studies, serving as a training supervisor in a foster family agency, and teaching future social workers at the graduate level.
I was a case manager when I was promoted to supervisor. I had no formal supervision training, only what I had watched other supervisors do. It was not until my doctoral work, and a lot of learning along the way, that I understood what effective supervision really looks like.
That is why everything I create starts with one question: will this help someone on an ordinary, overloaded day? If the answer is no, it does not make it into the training.
